6 Department of Computer Science The field of computer science is highly dynamic and the Computer Science department develops and enhances its curriculum continuously to cope with and accommodate our rapidly changing world. The Department of Computer Science offers a world-class program that thoroughly prepares students for advanced careers within the computer industry. The department has seen rapid growth since its establishment and thus exhibits strengths in information retrieval, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Databases, Data Mining, Computer Vision, Software Engineering, Computer Graphics, Theoretical Computer Science, Networking, and Multimedia Technologies. The Department of Computer Science offers a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science, Information Technology –Multimedia, Biomedical informatics, and it aims to accomplish the following: • Provide students with a broad knowledge of Computer Science. • Develop students’ abilities in analyzing, designing, implementing, and testing complete software systems. • Develop students’ capabilities in critical thinking and communicating their ideas. • Develop students’ teamwork skills. • Equip students with the skills and knowledge, based on feedback from potential employers and alumni necessary for their professional careers and for pursuing post-graduate studies. • Enable students to understand their personal, professional, and ethical responsibilities. • Motivate students for continued self-development through life-long learning and professional development. UNPARALLELED RESOURCES Most of the courses in our department require hands-on experience. The department has dedicated a considerable number of laboratories, equipped with state-of-the-art computers and resources, to give students practical experience. In addition, the University provides its own computing facilities. Networking: The resources are distributed across twelve different general labs, three specialized labs, faculty and staff offices and one resource room. All equipment is networked through a high-speed 100 Mbps Ethernet connection, and is connected to the University-wide network and to the Internet through high-speed access connections. Equipment: Departmental equipment is considerable and includes 250 Windows-based PCs with “state-of-the-art” Intel microprocessors. The department also operates two MAC labs, which contain 50 workstations. Networking Lab: The CS Department has two labs on the men’s and women’s campuses, designed especially and equipped for computer network experiments. Faculty in the Department of Computer Science have won a variety of honors and awards over the years nationally and regionally in the field of higher education. Our faculty and graduate students consistently produce research that has been published in high-impact journals. Our students, both graduate and undergraduate, excel on national and international platforms. For instance, several of our graduate students have been given scholarships to continue their higher studies in top international universities, and many students have been employed by leading local and international companies, such Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, and Etisalat.

The program meets accreditation breadth requirements across the entire discipline of computing. Furthermore, students are required to take a number of advanced elective courses in some of the major subject areas of computing to satisfy accreditation depth requirements in computer science. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The knowledge and skills students acquire in the IT Multimedia program will provide graduates with the necessary qualifications to assume careers in a wide range of public and private sector industries here in the UAE and overseas. The UAE in general, and Dubai in particular, have become a global media hub in the region where media-related businesses thrive together. Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Informatics The BSc in Biomedical Informatics is designed to provide multidisciplinary knowledge and skills to the students, enabling them to work in the various tracks related to biomedical informatics with many career options lying ahead. The United Arab Emirates has addressed in its 2021 vision the importance of providing world-class healthcare, which can be boosted by this program producing innovative and skilled graduates. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Graduates of the program can work in governmental agencies, private, and international organizations such as hospitals, medical centers, they also have the opportunity to work as consultants for healthcare insurance companies, and universities, among others. Working positions range from research work at research institutes, academic work at universities, software engineers at software companies, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and healthcare laboratories. 11 UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH - COLLEGE OF COMPUTING AND INFORMATICS GRADUATE PROGRAMS Master of Science in Computer Science The Computer Science Graduate Program is designed to further explore the fields of computing and open doors to leadership positions in companies and to doctoral studies at internationally recognized universities. As a student in the M.Sc. Computer Science program, you will develop theoretical knowledge of computer science and problem-solving and analytical skills. The Department of Computer Science offers a thesis based M.Sc. program. The M.Sc. thesis consists of a thorough integrated literature survey in a specific area, a critical analysis of approaches and results, and a discussion of areas requiring further work. In addition, it includes a report on the research undertaken by the student. The thesis report must constitute sufficient evidence of the student’s mastery of the research area. By the end of the program, an examination committee will review the thesis to determine whether or not it meets the standards set forth by the University, and will conduct an oral examination to test the candidate’s knowledge of the thesis subject and related fields. Master of Science in Data Science The MSc in Data Science program stimulates research activities in the area of computer science, statistics, and their application. This will enrich both undergraduate and graduate programs in both College of Computing and Informatics and College of Science. Faculty of both Computer Science and Mathematics departments contribute to the interdisciplinary teaching and research of MSc in Data Science program. In addition, interdisciplinary research projects could be achieved with the other departments at the university. The program accepts students from any related undergraduate program of computing or mathematics. For students who lack some foundational knowledge, the program offers remedial courses to bridge the lack of background knowledge before embarking on the required courses. Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence The Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence Program (MSCAI) aims to offer the graduate student foundational and advanced knowledge in the topics related to Artificial Intelligence (AI). The program is intended to accept incoming students from varied computing related undergraduate programs. Keeping in mind that not all incoming students have foundational knowledge, the program offers remedial courses before embarking on advanced topics in the electives. The program is offered in a one-track mode, which is thesis-based. The program requires completion of a substantial research component culminated with a formal thesis (equivalent to 9 credit hours of course work). The program has a compulsory component that ensures a common knowledge base for all students. The compulsory courses were selected to match the minimum compulsory knowledge that every student must have. Followed by elective courses which were selected to offer students variety of depth topics for specialization. Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science The Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science (PhD-CS) program’s main goal is to provide advanced knowledge in the field of computer science with an in-depth research experience. The program will offer a comprehensive list of courses based on the core of computer science, research, and optimization methodologies concentrated on advanced development in computer science. Candidates admitted to the program are expected to have completed a master’s degree in Computer Science or a closely related field. For the award of PhD-CS degree, candidates are required to successfully finish the course work, pass a comprehensive exam, and complete a research-based dissertation. The PhD-CS program emphasizes proficiency in understanding fundamental and advanced topics in computer science, communicating learned knowledge with excellent oral andwritten skills, and taking the lead in research and development in a chosen field of expertise. The candidates should demonstrate their ability to engage independently in state-of-theart research and provide original and significant contributions in their area of specialization.
12 Department of Computer Engineering The Department of Computer Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate programs since 1997. Computer Engineering is a hybrid study of basic electrical engineering, modern electronics, and computer hardware and software. This includes the design of the electronics (hardware) of the computer, the design of the software (system and applications software), and the interconnection of computer systems into a network. Computer engineers provide the key building blocks in our modern information technology-based society from improved software systems and high-speed computers to advanced integrated circuits (ICs) and next-generation communication networks. Graduates from the Computer Engineering program gain knowledge, practice, and design capabilities in the following areas: • Information and Network Security: Computer engineers design and implement cryptography mechanisms, protocols, software and hardware systems to protect the Internet and information systems fromhostile attacks and security threats. • Communications and Networks: Computer engineers design and build faster communication networks, and network applications. • Software: Computer engineers design and implement software for Internet search engines, gaming, mobile devices, multimedia applications, and medical imaging. • Hardware and Embedded Systems: Computer engineers design and build embedded hardware and software systems for general purpose computers as well as airplanes, robots, smart appliances, mobile phones, media players, etc… Computer technology and related applications such as telecommunications and networking systems are advancing at a very rapid pace. A modern computer engineering curriculum needs to be dynamic to accommodate the inevitable challenges of the future. It also needs to be thoroughly founded in the original theories of electronics, hardware and software design.
13 UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH - COLLEGE OF COMPUTING AND INFORMATICS UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering The Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (CPE) provides students with a comprehensive education in the design and development of computer systems. Computer engineers explore the creation of both hardware (physical components) and firmware, which is a crucial form of software enabling operating systems and applications to optimize hardware utilization. The CPE students acquire the skills to develop, prototype, and test a diverse range of computerbased systems, such as supercomputers, smartphones, laptops, servers, and IoT devices. The knowledge gained in the CPE program enables students to secure employment across diverse sectors, including the consumer electronics industry, the communication sector, the aircraft industry, and the field of robotics and artificial intelligence. The B.Sc. program in Computer Engineering is ABET accredited. PROGRAM OF STUDY As a student, you will spend your first year learning the fundamentals of mathematics and sciences. As you advance in the program, you will study required departmental courses covering the main areas of computer engineering which include digital design, microprocessor design, computer architecture, embedded systems design, networking, programming, data structures and algorithmdesign, operating systems, and information security. These courses give the computer engineering student a strong foundation in the various disciplines of computer engineering including both hardware and software parts of the computing machines. Students receive theoretical information in weekly lectures and tutorial sessions. In addition, most of the core courses include practical hands-on experience in a laboratory environment. 14 Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity Engineering The Bachelor of Cybersecurity Engineering program equips students with the skills and knowledge to protect computer systems from various threats, including hardware theft, software damage, data breaches, and service disruptions. This program prepares graduates for a fulfilling and impactful career in cybersecurity, where they can play a crucial role in safeguarding our digital world against ever-evolving cyber threats. Beyond cybersecurity expertise, the program provides a strong foundation in engineering systems, covering design, implementation, and testing. PROGRAM OF STUDY This program is designed using the credit hour system and is established to deliver 132 credit hours of courses that are divided into general education (24 credit hours) and specialized cybersecurity and engineering subjects (108 credit hours). All technical courses are designed carefully for an engineering degree with professional international curriculum standards. Both theoretical and practical aspects of the subjects will be covered and demonstrated. 16 Department of Information Systems The Department of BIS offers a 123-credit hour B.Sc. program, which is designed to provide a balance between theory and practice and give students the opportunity to develop IT skills through hands-on problem solving and laboratory practice. The BIS program focuses on the tools, techniques, and technologies used in the analysis, design, development, and management of information systems. The program includes the following areas of discipline: Computer Programming, Systems Analysis and Design, Database Management, Business Networking and Telecommunications, and Internet computing. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems The department of Information Systems offers a B.Sc. degree in Business Information Systems (BIS). BIS is the application of information technology to support business activities. It includes the planning, development, management, and use of information technology tools to help people perform business processes related to information processing and management.
