At the second level, this stream includes topics related to human structure and function, anatomy of the head and neck, and, neuroanatomy. This leads to the third level of this stream which includes topics dealing with the nature and causes of human disease and their manifestation at the cellular, organ, and clinical levels. The Dental and Health Science stream emphasizes the scientific basis of dentistry and covers oral anatomy, preventive dentistry, and the dentist-patient relationship. It also covers oral histology and embryology, oral biochemistry, dental occlusion, masticatory function and disorder, human growth and development, and orthodontics. Dental and Health Science covers aspects of pharmacology, medicine, and surgery related to Dental Practice. These streams are integrated and form the basis for each PBL case. This occurs concurrently with the development of clinical skills in various technical and clinical areas of dentistry, which begins from day one in the Dental Clinical Practice stream. The faculty in our Department therefore contribute to both basic dental sciences and clinical education. 6

Bachelor of Science inDental Surgery PROGRAM OF STUDY The curriculum consists of three phases that are completed over a six-year period. Phase 1: Foundation Sciences The first year at the College of Dental Medicine prepares students to achieve the level of knowledge necessary to assimilate the more challenging medical and dental science subjects in the later phases. Students are exposed to new learning methods in both physics and biology in the form of problem-based learning, group projects, critical and lateral thinking and scientific literature research and writing. Self-directed learning philosophy is emphasized and other academic and social activities are conducted to facilitate a smooth transfer from high school education to university campus life. Phase II: Integrated Dental Sciences FIRST, SECOND and THIRD YEAR– BDS 2 ,1 and 3 The Phase II program runs over three years and is composed of teaching-learning activities that are delivered in four streams. A “stream” is an educational structure, organization, and philosophy that depicts a collection of established general science, basic medical, dental and clinical sciences and the practice disciplines, which are integrated to represent the knowledge, skills and values necessary for the best healthcare at the individual and community level. The four streams are Dental Health Sciences, Dental Clinical Practice, Human Biology and General Studies. The streams are integrated laterally during the course of the first year and vertically in subsequent years. Phase III: Dental Clerkship FOURTH and FIFTH YEAR– BDS 4 and 5 The Phase III or Dental Clerkship phase is a two-year integrated full-time clinical rotation in four major dental and medical disciplines, ending with a multidisciplinary general practice clerkship in the sixth year. The teaching elements in this phase are the product of the integration of both the Dental Clinical Practice and Dental and Health Sciences streams. The teaching-learning activities are mainly in the form of multidisciplinary seminars conducted by multi-specialty faculty. This leads to innovative and in-depth training in each of the dental/ medical disciplines and at the same time, students apply this knowledge and skills in general dental practice clinics. A strong emphasis is placed on clinical community dentistry and outreach activities. Students are also required to complete one elective project in a related medical, dental or health sciences specialty in partial fulfillment of the BDS degree. The dental clerkship phase is a student’s training ground for independent learning and the final development of a ‘life-long learner’ and future dentist.
