6 Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS), also called Clinical Laboratory Science, provides the laboratory information and services needed for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. It is the largest single medical domain to deliver health and disease status reports, laboratory tests, analyses and test results which the majority of critical medical decisions are based on. Medical laboratory scientists perform a variety of laboratory tests to detect and diagnose diseases such as diabetes, leukemia, heart disease, bacterial infections, genetic disorders, and many other diseases and health conditions. The department offers a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences and a Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences Our Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) program is one of the premier programs established within the College of Health Sciences at the University of Sharjah. Our program enjoys a reputation of excellence, within the local, regional and global academic and medical communities, in addition to a strong record of professional success among our graduates. The MLS program prepares competent professionals skilled in performing and interpreting laboratory tests results vital to the diagnosis and treatment of disease. PROGRAM OF STUDY The MLS program is a four-year program leading to a B.Sc. Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences (B.Sc. MLS). A student’s first two years are composed of general college requirements and MLS prerequisites, while the third year is dedicated to MLS program requirements. The fourth year engages students in clinical coursework and training at regional hospitals. The extensive nature of the fourth year practical component guarantees students a high degree of technical and professional competency prior to graduating from our program.

GRADUATE PROGRAMS MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES The department of Medical Lab Sciences at the University of Sharjah prides itself on being one of few academic departments in the UAE and the Gulf Region to train competent medical lab scientists. However, as junior professionals, it takes our graduates many years of practice to gain the experience and knowledge necessary to work as senior lab managers. Additionally, there are batteries of advanced and technically-challenging biochemical and molecular tests that need special training and can only be conducted by senior specialists. The proposed program is designed in such a way to help prospective students to develop the theoretical background and technical skills needed for such professional roles through tailor-made theoretical and practical courses. Students will also acquire the theoretical and practical experience in lab quality control and quality assurance by enrolling in compulsory courses designed to help them achieve this goal. Gaining enough proficiency to be an effective liaison of the profession, be it with medical teams at their facility, government agencies, public and private health care sectors, or quality control/assurance entities requires much deeper knowledge and experience than what a regular undergraduate training program in medical lab sciences would usually provide.

8 Department of Medical Diagnostic Imaging Medical Diagnostic imaging (MDI) is an important part of the diagnostic process. The Program prepares students to work on different imaging modalities, including Computerized Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Medicine (NM), Ultrasound (US) and digital imaging systems which are gradually replacing conventional films worldwide. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS Bachelor of Science in Medical Diagnostic Imaging Medical Diagnostic Imaging (MDI) is a medical specialty that uses X-rays, ultra-sound waves, and magnetic fields to produce images of organs and other internal structures of the body in order to detect, diagnose and treat diseases. It is also used to monitor the progress of diseases and medical conditions and/or guide medical procedures. The MDI Department offers two plans to fulfill the career objectives and aspirations of its students. The Bachelor of Science in Medical Diagnostic Imaging (B.Sc. MDI) takes a minimum of four years full-time study, during which students complete 137 credit hours. The Bridging Plan (Track A) takes a minimum of two years full-time study (73 credit hours), while (Track B) requires a minimum of three years full-time study (99 credit hours).

Students may seek careers in hospital settings or outpatient clinics. You may specialize in computed tomography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, digital imaging, PACS or nuclear medicine and/or be responsible for quality assurance and overseeing the implementation of new technology. Graduates might manage an entire radiology department, including its budget and personnel or assume academic teaching positions. The boundaries of your career in Medical Diagnostic Imaging are limitless, determined only by your abilities and interests. PROGRAM OF STUDY Students in the Medical Diagnostic Imaging program are introduced to an array of practical and theoretical courses on the safe use of imaging techniques. Students learn about skeletal radiology, imaging of the chest and abdomen, and fluoroscopy imaging of the digestive system, the heart, blood vessels and urinary system. Highly qualified faculty deliver courses in radiographic techniques, diagnostic equipment and patient care. Advanced techniques courses include Interventional Radiography (IR), Ultrasound (US), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), and Nuclear Medicine (NM). 10 Department of Nursing The Department of Nursing was established in 1999 with a bachelor program. The program is nationally recognized for excellence in nursing education. The department also strives for gaining an international reputation. The first Masters in Adult Critical Care was established in September 2020 to fulfill the increasing demand of nursing professionals in the local/regional market. This is the first program in the UAE. The Department of Nursing has grown significantly since its inception and is now offering a Master of Science in Adult Critical Care Nursing. The department is committed to excellence in the field of education, research, nursing practice, and administration. The program emphasizes the development of student analytical skills through problem-based and team-based learning. 14 Department of Physiotherapy Physiotherapy is a health care profession in the field of rehabilitation that promotes optimal health in individuals of all ages. Physiotherapists are qualified to provide preventive and therapeutic services which aim at restoring function and preventing disability arising from disease, trauma or injury. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy The role of a physiotherapy graduate is to alleviate suffering, to enhance the physical abilities and wellness, and to improve the quality of life of people of all ages suffering from diseases/ disorders of bones, muscles, joints, heart, lungs, and nervous system. This role includes education, prevention, treatment and intervention, and rehabilitation. The University of Sharjah’s physiotherapy program is committed to serving its students, the community and the physiotherapy profession. The program accomplishes this by providing quality education, research and an array of community services. Through our responsive curriculum, the program delivers the highest quality of education to our students made evident by the career placement of our graduates, the continued growth of our program and our leadership role in the physiotherapy field within the community. The program further seeks to conduct quality and applicable research reflecting the unique needs of the broader region and the population by providing required physiotherapists to serve the area and perform community outreach and services. PROGRAM OF STUDY Students complete a total of 138 credit hours over at least four academic years to earn a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Physiotherapy (PT). The initial year covers basic topics such as biology, physics, chemistry and other college and University compulsory courses. In the second year, students are introduced to the core concepts of physiotherapy including biomechanics (the study of human movement), therapeuticmodalities (the study of modalities used in patient treatment) and assessment, as well as a moderate level of exposure to clinical training.

Students are also well prepared to pursue graduate studies towards a Master’s or PhD degree. Physiotherapists may assume non-patient care roles in areas such as health policy, health insurance, healthcare administration or as healthcare executives or professors. In the third year, students study more advanced topics in specialty areas, such as musculoskeletal coursework and neurology while engaging in their clinical practicum, which carries forward to the fourth year. 16 Department of Environmental Health Sciences The Department of Environmental Health Sciences graduates environmental health professionals equipped with an understanding of how the environment impacts health and how to assess and control environmental determinants that have an impact on health. Students further learn to develop mitigation and management plans towards environmental protection and sustainability. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health Sciences Bachelor of Science program in Environmental Health integrates diverse tenets of environmental health in a pursuit to acquire, disseminate, and apply knowledge critical to understanding and mitigating the impacts of the natural, built, and social environments on human health. Its interdisciplinary curriculum emphasizes the evaluation and control of major and contemporary environmental health issues in such fields as water supply and sanitation, waste management, occupational health, food hygiene, vector control, air and marine pollution, sustainable development, among others. PROGRAM OF STUDY After completing the foundation year, students engage in the study of the specialized courses in air pollution, global environmental issues water pollution, occupational health and safety, marine ecology, environmental and occupational toxicology, epidemiology, research methodology, food quality and safety, integrated solid and hazardous waste management, vector control, local environmental issues, building and human habitation, and environmental health management and legislation.

GRADUATE PROGRAMS MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH The MSc EH program is a two to four year full/part time program (33 credits), accredited by the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Education as well as internationally by the German Accreditation Agency in Health and Social Care. It comprises of two tracks – Track (A) Occupational Hygiene and Safety, and Track (B) Food Safety Management. Both tracks are essential in preparing specialized Environmental Health professionals ready to become effective members of workforce and engage in diverse employment opportunities at Ministries, municipalities, environmental agencies, various industries, airports and ports, consultancy firms, hospitality, food safety, oil and gas, research institutes, academia, among others. Graduates of the MSc EH program may also opt to pursue further doctoral studies in the field of environmental health science.

18 Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics The Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics (CN&D) prepares clinical nutritionists to play a critical role in health care delivery. The program focuses on the intensive study of allied aspects of life, health and social sciences that are required in the understanding of food, nutrition and its relationship with health. The department offers a bachelor degree of Science in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics and a Master of Science in Applied Nutrition. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS Bachelor of Science in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics Nutrition and Dietetics involves the art and science of applying the principles of food and nutrition in maintaining good health. Clinical nutritionists and dietitians play a vital role in promoting the health and nutrition of the community. CN&D Programprovides a novel and integrated approach to nutrition, foodmanagement and public health and addresses local and national health issues. The program focuses on various aspects of food and nutrition, while integrating social, behavioral and life sciences. Comprehensive courses are delivered through diverse teaching strategies during classroom, laboratory and clinical practice sessions. PROGRAM OF STUDY The four-year Bachelor of Science in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics is a comprehensive degree program. The first year comprises the essentials of life and health sciences including chemistry, biology, physics, human anatomy, and physiology. The second year focuses on the applied sciences of biochemistry and microbiology with students being introduced to the fundamentals of nutrition, food science, and the psychosocial aspects of food behavior.
